The Sirtfood diet is just one of the key trending diets of today, thanks to U.K singer Adele. After being in isolation for almost all of 2020, it is true that most of us have probably gained a few kilos, from comfort eating. Rightfully so, along with the lack of movement and restriction to working from home. But how effective is the Sirtfood diet compared to others?
There are heaps of diets and trending eating patterns going around that claim to be better for your health. There’s the ketogenic diet, the paleo diet, the Ornish diet, Whole30 diet, Dash diet, Mediterranean diet, and intermitted fasting. So, I bet when you heard of a diet that encouraged eating chocolate and drinking red wine, you probably thought, yes!
No diet is ever easy or perfect, each one requires an amount of effort and sacrifice. With your promise to bring the right commitment and attitude towards a healthier lifestyle, there is no reason why you will not achieve great results.
Success comes when we apply ourselves and make a dedication to change. So, which are the best diets and what are the good and bad aspects? And can you really lose weight?
WHAT IS THE SIRTFOOD ALL ABOUT
Two UK health consultants, Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, came up with the concept of the Sirtfood diet. The diet combines eating Sirtfoods while calorie restricting, both of which may trigger the body to produce higher levels of sirtuins, which leads to rapid weight loss. They encourage these Sirtfoods that help to burn fat and by cutting so many calories, it is most likely you will lose weight.
HOW SIRTFOOD WORKS?
During the first three days of phase one, you are asked to restrict your calories to 1,000 per day. Hardly enough when this is actually the intake for a young child. On average adults need between 2000-2500 calories a day, depending on your age and physical activity.
On days 4 to 7 of the first phase, you increase your intake to 1500 calories, which includes two green juices and two meals per day.
Some of the Sirtfoods you can eat & drink include,
- Kale
- Apples
- Coffee (black)
- Matcha /Green Tea
- Parsley
- Ginger
- Turmeric
- Rocket
- Strawberries
- Chocolate
- Blueberries
- Capers
- Medjool dates
- Celery
- Red wine
Sirtfoods are mostly plant-based and high in antioxidants that help trick your body into burning fat at a higher rate. The skinny juice doesn’t relate to red wine or coffee. It is a green juice made as a supplement for meals while you are counting calories.
The benefits include building muscle while suppressing appetite. These foods can also help improve memory, help control blood sugar levels while cleaning up the damage from free radical molecules, which help to repair our cells.
WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF SIRT-FOOD DIET?
Firstly, if you can actually stick to the diet by eating that many calories without getting tired, then well done to you. Long term not eating enough can cause all kinds of dangers not to mention a weaker immune and deficiencies from a lack of nutrients.
The diet also cuts out different vitamins and minerals we need from other sources and seems restrictive.
So, if you are trying to drop a few kilos or speeding up your metabolism, what can you do that would be similar but safer and probably more effective long-term? Which are the best diets?
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DIETING & YOUR BEST OPTION
When it comes to zipping the mouth to lose a few kilos on the waist, some of us are more determined and realise that it is a game of persistence. But does it really have to be that hard?
Author Ayleen Powter, a dietitian, and nutritionist exclaimed that it is important for people to be properly educated about what their body really needs when trying to lose weight. On the Sirtfood diet, people who survive the first week will more than likely lose weight, but this is due to the calories sacrificed and water content that you normally lose. When you starve your body of calories it actually starts to slow down your metabolism, which can cause you to put the weight back on afterward.
WHAT A DIETITIAN SUGGESTS ABOUT THE BEST WAY TO DIET
Miss Powter also goes on to explain that much of our eating patterns are related to how we feel emotionally. Her book Sirtfood Diet Official Guide educates people on the calories needed, physical activity, and different nutrients required to be healthy while dieting.
